Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

This post contains spoilers about the movie "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World."

The first thing I have to say about this movie is that it was hilarious. It had me laughing from the second or third sentence. This film was also very unique. It provided new styles and layers to a love story that has been told thousands of times over. I will begin with the rating this time, and I would give it a 9/10.

"Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" was about an awkward 22-year-old named (shocker) Scott Pilgrim who, when the story begins, is dating a 17-year-old named Knives Chau. Scott is the bass guitarist in a band called the Sex Bob-ombs, who do not rock (in their own and many other people throughout the movies' opinions). Scott lives in Toronto, Canada, and begins having dreams about a girl with roller skates and pink hair. This is Ramona Flowers, who Scott later meets in real life and breaks up with Knives for. To make a long story short, Scott ends up having to fight Ramona's six evil ex-boyfriends (and one ex-girlfriend), who are trying to get Ramona to return to Gideon (one of the evil exes). Gideon is also the sponsor of the battle of the bands that Scott's band has entered, and in order to get a record deal from him, they must defeat all the evil exes. Scott wins Ramona's heart in the end and everything is peaches and rainbows.

The unique comic book effects added to this movie made is extremely aesthetically pleasing. I enjoyed reading the words like I would in a comic and being able to see the onomatopoeia as they occurred. For example, when a character banged their head on something, the word "thonk" would float beside them for a moment. The movie also becomes something like a video game when the fight scenes are playing, because the "announcer" will yell things like "knock-out!" and "bad." Scott also receives coins when he defeats something, which I though was a hilarious little twist.

The thing that impacted me the most about this movie was the twist at the end. I thought that when Scott confessed his love for Ramona and gained the powers of love (and an awesome sword), he would defeat all the exes and that would be the end. When Scott died and went to Limbo, though, I was shocked. I thought that love would conquer all and be the savior in Scott's life. Scott realizes in Limbo, however, that he needs to have self-respect. He needs be dignified and tell everyone how he feels about them, and to make him feel better about his own character and conduct. When he uses his extra life, he returns to apologize to everyone he has wronged and he encouraged everyone he can, and he gains the power of self-respect (and another awesome sword with better stats). Self-respect becomes the ultimate force in this movie, what turns the tide from failure to victory.

All-in-all, this movie was hilariously written and had wonderful effects. I absolutely loved it! Thanks for reading!
