It's a song about a break up, and it seems to have been a really bad break up. The first two lines of the song "Love doesn't come so easily, this doesn't have to end in tragedy" express the writer's remorse that this relationship ended. He obviously doesn't think this for the best and wants to continue the relationship. He also doesn't really understand why his companion is leaving him. He says their life was a mess but he treated them like a "princess," which leads us to believe that he showered her with gifts and attention, perhaps smothering her in the process.
This song is surprisingly upbeat for a break up song. This could possibly indicate that although the writer is remorseful for the end of the relationship, he desires a new chapter in his life to make new relationships and meet new people. It could also be a weight off of his shoulders because of his former partner's messy life. He might have also gotten tired of treating her like royalty. He could perhaps have had built of anger inside of him and was venting his secret happiness with the end of that treatment with the upbeat tone of the song.
The only awful thing about this song is the repetitiveness. It is one of the the most repetitive songs that I have ever heard. It's lovely, fun to listen to, and upbeat, but when it gets stuck in your head (like it is for me!), it gets very old very quickly. I had to turn on other music in an attempt to get it out of my head, which I never do when I am writing, but extreme circumstances call for extreme measures.
I recommend this song as an occasional listen, maybe once a week or even month. If I listened to it 24/7, I would get very tired of it. It is a good, straightforward song, though, and I recommend that everyone at least listen to it.
(Hey, it's Michael from "Princess Diaries!")
