This post contains spoilers for the 2009 version of "Children of the Corn."
This movie was a bit ridiculous. It was creepy enough, and I hid behind a pillow a lot of the time, but nothing really happened. There was very little to the plot of this movie. It just wasn't substantial at all. I watched it hoping for resolution or something at the end of the film to signify that it was over, but there was none (or little).
The movie begins with a bunch of children sitting in a barn sacrificing a pig to a god that they call "He Who Walks Behind the Rows." They are talking about killing adults because they are blasphemous and must be sacrificed to please their god. Then, the movie goes to an angry couple named Burt and Vicky, who seem to be arguing their way across the country in 1975 (12 years after the first scene). Burt is not watching the road, though, and a child with a throat that had been slit runs into the middle of the road and Burt kills him. Burt investigates the cornfields around them and finds a suitcase in the middle of it. Vicky and Burt drive to Gatlin, Nebraska, the nearest town, and are shocked to find no one there. They explore, but Burt leaves Vicky in the car while he investigates the church, and Vicky is killed by the group of kids. Burt kills a few and runs off into the corn. The kids chase him, but ultimately fail until Burt starts hallucinating and falls over in a clearing were bodies are hung up. Burt is killed and hung up alongside Vicky, and the kids lower the age of sacrifice to 18. One of the girls has a vision of herself burning the corn, but we don't know if she follows through.
The thing that I disliked the most about this movie was that the first 45 minutes were not scary at all. The movie is only an hour and a half long and they spent the first half arguing in the car. The rest of the movie after that is still not scary, but it does get a bit gruesome. There are some graphic scenes, but they are violent to the point of being ridiculous. It was just poorly done.
And then, the ending. I absolute hate it when there is no resolution. There were only two good guys, and they both died. The kids are still at large, and even if one thought about getting rid of the corn, who knows if she would follow through or not? She was one of the older girls, and therefore pregnant, and there are about 30 other kids that could kill her. The ending is a mystery, I suppose.
If you like short, silly movies with no resolution, then you will like this movie. I, however, give it a four out of 10 because it just rubbed me the wrong way. It was made for TV, though, so what do you expect?
