As I learn more and more about the 1920's in AP US History, I've come to the conclusion that I was born in the wrong time period. Before the Great Depression hit the United States, the 20's seemed like an almost-perfect time period. It had its imperfections of course, but with the entertainment, bright lights, new technology, and the new artistic expression artists found in music, it seems like it would've been wonderful to live in.
During this period of time, nightclubs were beginning to take off. People were putting a lot more stock into the entertainment business than they used to because of all the spare time they now had. This spare time was a result of shorter work days and more money, which was a key factor in the entire 20s decade. The nightclubs were full of flappers, or female dancer who could dance. They could really shake it up there, not like what a lot of people think is dancing and shaking it today. Also, their dances were a lot more appropriate than they are today. Their dancing was more about seeing how far one could go without crossing any lines of inappropriateness.
Something I would have loved to see is the flight of Charles Lindbergh. Here's a photo of him and his plane "The Spirit of St. Louis:"
Now, isn't that adorable? Apparently, all the ladies loved him, too, so he would've been like the Backstreet Boys of the 1920s, and I love the Backstreet Boys. Also, his flight to Paris was amazing. No one had ever done something like that before. A solo flight over the Atlantic Ocean? Inconcievable! It would've been fantastic to see in this decade of firsts.
One final thing I'll mention about how amazing the 20's was - although there are many more - is the popularity of the radio. How cool would it have been to see that for the first time? To listen to something else that someone else is listening to at the exact same time as you? That would've been mind blowing! I quite possibly would have peed my pants in excitement. What an invention!
The 20's was an amazing era full of wonder and impossible feats becoming possible. It would be an amazing period to time travel to, were time travel possible. The radio and nightclubs being invented would've been, in itself, something fantastic to witness. And Charles Lindbergh? What a major heartthrob.
