This blog contains spoilers about the NEW movie "Pitch Perfect!"
Another movie about a club of beautiful, singing teenagers? Really? Normally, I would say "no way!" and not go see this because it is so cliché and overdone. When it comes to musical shows, Glee kind of overshadows everything. It makes you so tired of movies and shows like it that you never want to hear another acapella version of a Madonna song or you'll throw up rainbows. However, I caved and went to see "Pitch Perfect," partly because it got good reviews and partly because my friends wanted me to go with them.
"Pitch Perfect" was a about a girl named Beca (Anna Kendrick) that is finally going to college at her father's behest. What she really wants to do, though, is become a DJ. Her father tells her that a disk jockey is not a real profession and that she will thank him eventually for making her go college. She ends up working at a campus radio station where she meets a boy named Jesse (Skylar Astin). She then joins the all-girls acapella group called the "Bellas" and Jesse joins their rivals, an all-boy group called the "Treble Makers." The Bellas are a ragtag group of awkward, hilarious girls that teach Anna what it's like to have friends that are female. They sing a lot (obviously) and there are ups and downs within the group, but they have fun and become stronger because of it.
I don't want to spoil the ending for anyone, so if you don't want to hear about what happens, you probably shouldn't read past this point.
The movie is a love story, essentially, with much thrown in the mix. It is a classic unrequited love story, where the two members of opposing factions meet and fall in love. It was a bit disappointing, though, because halfway through the movie, Jesse condemns movies like this. He says movies where the guy always gets the girl are overdone and boring (or something similar to that). The end of their romance is super predictable. I had hoped that Beca would suddenly change her focus and realize that Jesse's roommate was an awesome guy and that she should date him instead of Jesse. This was not the case, though, and after a scene involving the movie "The Breakfast Club," it is very simple to see what will happen throughout the rest of the movie.
Despite the predictability of it, this movie was hilarious. The girls, "Fat Amy" (Rebel Wilson) especially, were a constant cause of laughter in the audience when I saw this film. They crack witty jokes that fit their personality, and, once again, even though this aspect of the movie (a group of misfits) is overdone, it was overdone well in this movie. The jokes, at least, were original and hilarious.
And yes, the songs were fantastic. The mash-ups made by Beca on her computer were the best songs in the film, in my opinion. They were fun to listen to, and most of the time, the songs, no matter how different they were, complemented each other extremely well.
Overall, I'd give this movie a 7 out of 10. I would definitely go see it again, but only once more in the theatre. Then, I'd just wait for it to come out on DVD. You guys should definitely go see it, though!
