Maddy, in the Living Room, With a Laptop

This post contains spoilers about the movie "Clue."

Clue was always my favorite board game as a child. However, it required multiple players, and while there were always people bustling around my house, no one ever wanted to play it with me. They deemed it to be boring and long. Some even thought it to be too difficult. I never thought this, I thought it was the greatest game ever invented! Imagine my excitement when I discovered they had made a movie out of the game in 1985.

For those of you who don't know, Clue is a whodunnit mystery game. You choose to be one of six people: Miss Scarlet, Ms. White, Mr. Green, Professor Plum, Colonel Mustard, or Mrs. Peacock. I always chose to be Miss Scarlet because she rolls first in the board game. You are given cards that show locations, people, and murder weapons. One of each card is placed in an envelope in the middle of the board. You then must discover, by making suggestions as you move around the board, who committed the crime. Was it Miss Scarlet in the billiard room with a knife? Or maybe it was Colonel Mustard in the ballroom with the lead pipe?

The movie is very similar to the board game, in that they are trying to solve a mystery. The six people listed above are invited to the dinner party of a man named Mr. Boddy who has been blackmailing them. None of them know each other or the reason they are there, but they are all greeted by the butler of Mr. Boddy, Wadsworth. After eating dinner, they discover why they are there and after the explanation provided by Mr. Boddy and a gift to each of them of a weapon, he is killed, or thought to have been. The maid screams, drawing them away from the dead body, but when they return it is nowhere to be found. They enter the hall and discover that Mr. Boddy is now officially dead when he falls out of the restroom with blood all over and the candlestick falls with him. The group attempts to discover who the killer is, but many more people are murdered in the house that night. I don't want to spoil the endings (there are three) because I sincerely think everyone should watch this movie.

The film isn't just suspenseful, it's hilarious. Among the murder and suspense is humor and witty remarks made by the characters. When I began the movie for the first time, I thought it was going to be dark and frightening, and I would have to watch it with the lights on. This was an incorrect assumption, however, as I found myself laughing every other sentence. The characters are humorous and I found myself really connecting with some (not that I'm a murderer, I just feel the need for comic relief and shouting).

The movie itself is very well done. I sat through it three times in one week. It never gets boring for me. I continue to find new things, see new clues, and hear new jokes that I might have missed when I re-watch the movie. I found it absolutely compelling and it kept my attention well.

This has got to be one of my favorite movies. I would rate it eleven out of ten (hopefully someday I'll find a movie I don't like). Honestly, you should all watch it because it is both suspenseful and can bring a smile to your face. Thanks for reading!
