The Host: My Expectations

This post contains spoilers about the novel and upcoming movie, "The Host."

As they are going to make "The Host" by Stephanie Meyer into a movie sometime this year, I felt it would be prudent to analyze the novel and talk about my predictions for the film. I just hope that the movie doesn't ruin my visualizations of the book, like with "Twilight." It doesn't look nearly as awful (in my opinion), though, in fact I actually know and like some of the actors in it.

"The Host" begins with the insertion of an alien life form called a "soul" being implanted into the human body of Melanie Stryder. When she wakes up, she remembers the last thing the body did, and the thoughts are all her's - except for one. She can feel the host body's (Melanie's) thoughts and resistance to the presence inside of her. Eventually, fleeing a Seeker (a sort of police officer the aliens became as humans) and following Melanie's thoughts, the alien, named Wanderer, finds a pocket of resistance to the aliens in the southwestern United States. These new humans are ones that Melanie knew, that she had relationships with, most specifically, her brother Jamie and her boyfriend Jared. The only problem is that Wanderer has also developed a bond with these people, and though they reject her, they work with her. Eventually, Wanda, as she has come to be known, falls in love with a human man named Ian and she is put into a different body so Melanie will be able to be with Jared and Jamie. The book ends with another group of humans finding them and showing them that they have an alien of their own in the group.

I loved this book and the way it captivated me. Everything in it seemed so harsh or so beautiful. I feel that the movie will not be able to convey such beauty and everything will look dull or extremely animated. They live in a system of caves in the books and I don't know how they will do that either, because some parts of the book are done in the dark where no one can see anything. Hopefully, the aliens will look how I pictured them at least, like tiny silver squids with hundreds of little tenticles.

On the topic of actors in this movie, I am happy with their choice for Jared. Max Irons has a nice, square face and pretty hair that they made a few shades darker than his skin, which is just how I pictured Jared. I also think he is just a good actor in general, having seen him in "Red Riding Hood." I'm not sure how I feel about their casting of Saoirse Ronan, though, because I've only ever seen her in "The Lovely Bones" and she seemed a lot younger then. Also, that movie was really odd and I was confused about ninety percent of the time, but I digress.

Anyways, I'm really excited about this movie coming out and I'll blog again when I actually go see it. Thanks for reading!
