Taboo Music

I'm not talking about music that is literally banned or places where music is not allowed. I'm talking about music that people deem unacceptable to listen to in our society. Depending on who you are, what your personality is like, and who your friends are, you could be scorned for listening to certain bands or artists. I hang out with people that typically listen to what could be called "Indie" music, meaning that I should not follow the other crowd and listen to "Pop." What happens when we do, though? Does the world implode? Does it start a zombie apocolypse? No. No it doesn't.

Because I don't have an iPod like so many other teenagers in my generation, I instead have a Spotify playlist. I have one because, unlike on iTunes, you don't have to download a song to listen to it. It is essentially Youtube without the videos. My playlist consists of mostly obscure bands and songs (you've probably never heard of them), but at the top of it are two recently added songs. These songs will probably get me laughed at by my peers, one maybe more than the others.

One is by One Direction. The other is by Nick Jonas.

I'm cringing and waiting for people to yell at me. You're probably wondering why I would, because One Direction is currently one of the most popular bands in the whole world, and Nick Jonas kind of fell off the face of it. The reason is because some people find this ridiculous. They think people should stick to their own music rather than partaking in various other types, which I think is ridiculous. These two songs are so vastly different from all my other music that they're almost refreshing.

All of the other things I have are sad, slow breakup songs or upbeat love songs about being happy and running through fields and being hipsters together. The One Direction song I have is a super sweet love song ("Little Things"), about all the little things that this guy loves about this girl. I can relate to the girl in this song because she seems so self-conscious. And the Nick Jonas song I have is just a fun song about himself. It puts me in a good mood, unlike all my other songs that make me a little bit sad. So branching out is good. Music puts you in different moods and makes you feel different things.

Despite what other people think, you should listen to the kind of music you want to listen to and not what other people think you should. (And just as a side note, it doesn't matter if you heard it first, music is for everyone not just yourself.)
