Analysis of Music: Part One

If you just take a glance at me, you probably will not notice anything significant about me. What I mean is, anyone can try to look like someone else, but trying to be like someone else is entirely different. You may be wondering why I am talking about a person's insides when I should be talking about music. Well, I believe that music can be the key to discovering the elements of other people. Music can express thoughts, feelings, and emotions that simple words could never convey. In essence, it is the very definition of "feelings." Songs are also a form of entertainment and enjoyment. They can cheer you up when you are feeling low, and they can energize you as you do physical activity. There are different genres, artists, and ways of looking at different pieces of music. Some songs are even like stories, with morals and lessons at the end!

I am going to attempt to explore many of these different factors of music, and on the way, learn about new artists and discover more about myself and others. Once a week, I will listen to a random song or artist that I have never listened to before, perhaps picked off of iTunes' top music or recommended to me by a friend. I may listen to the track three or four times to really get the message through, and then I will talk about what I learned from or about it.

The first song I have chosen is "Someday" by The Strokes from their album "Is This It?" At first glance, this song seems to be about being nostalgic and thinking about amazing things that happened in the past. If you look deeper, however, you will see that it is somewhat a conversation between someone and their current lover. They are telling this person that their ex thought they were not involved enough and this new person should probably not waste any time on them either, but if they really want to, then they are crazy.

Perhaps this song could be applied to real life in that you should not waste the time you have, no matter what others think. Things and people will change, but you will always be able to look back on the good times you had. When you are finished reminiscing, then you can look ahead to the future and enjoy it with people who care about you, even if you do not think you are worth their time.

I'm going to challenge myself to look back this week and remember good times with people who have moved away from me, physically and emotionally. At the same time, I will enjoy myself with those that are around me and love me.

Thanks for reading my blog!
